AsiaSat's Executive Chairman Peter Jackson Receives Lifetime Contribution Award

Peter Jackson, Executive Chairman of AsiaSat, was presented the 'Lifetime Contribution Award 2010' by the Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) at the CASBAA Charity Ball, one of the highlights of the CASBAA Convention held in Hong Kong on 28 October.

The Award honours Mr. Jackson’s long-time commitment to the development of Asia’s pay-TV and satellite communications industries.

Almost since the inception of the Asian pay-TV industry in the early 1990s Mr. Jackson has provided strong leadership, market insights and cultural sensitivity with an unfailing sense of humour, said Marcel Fenez, Chairman of CASBAA at the award presentation.

Mr. Jackson has been a member of CASBAA since he joined AsiaSat in 1993. Up until his recent resignation, he had served on the CASBAA Board since 1997, with the past ten years as the Treasurer.

Mr. Jackson has over 32 years of international experience in the satellite and telecommunications profession. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of AsiaSat for 17 years and moved on to the role of Executive Chairman in August 2010. Mr. Jackson has been widely recognised by the industry for his continued achievement and dedication to the satellite and broadcast community. He was presented the APSCC’s ‘Satellite Executive of the Year in Asia Pacific’ Award and the ‘CASBAA Chairman’s Award’ in 2006, and was inducted into the SSPI's Satellite Hall of Fame in 2009.

AsiaSat Chooses ILS Proton for AsiaSat 7 Launch

On 5 October 2010, AsiaSat entered into a contract with International Launch Services (ILS) for the launch of AsiaSat 7 on an ILS Proton rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan in late 2011.

AsiaSat 7, a Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) 1300 satellite, will carry C and Ku-band transponders with a design life of 15 years. It was originally ordered as AsiaSat 5C, a backup satellite for AsiaSat 5. With the successful launch of AsiaSat 5 in August 2009, this backup satellite was reconfigured as AsiaSat 7, which will be a replacement satellite for one of AsiaSat's flagship satellites, AsiaSat 3S at the orbital location of 105.5 degrees East.

Construction of AsiaSat 7 at the SS/L’s manufacturing facility at Palo Alto, California is progressing on schedule. ILS and Khrunichev, the manufacturer of the Proton system, have implemented a mission schedule that supports AsiaSat’s strategic replacement programme to assure service continuity for AsiaSat 3S's customers.

AsiaSat Introduces New DVB-S2 MCPC Platforms

To address the growing demand from international broadcasters, particularly for launching MPEG-4 HD channels to Asia, AsiaSat has introduced new C-band MCPC platforms that use DVB-S2 modulation to provide cost effective content delivery solutions from its Tai Po Earth Station in Hong Kong.

These MCPC platforms are based on a full dedicated transponder, and from its earth station in Hong Kong, AsiaSat provides one-stop services including space segment, signal downlink and turnaround, and uplink service for HD and SD content distribution.

With DVB-S2 increased throughput per transponder, and the unmatched access provided by AsiaSat’s satellites, these new MCPC platforms are ideal for broadcasters and channel providers looking for cost effective delivery solutions to telecast HD and SD programming and expand viewership across the region.

More International Sports Events via AsiaSat

The 2010 sports calendar has been one of the busiest and most exciting for AsiaSat. With its region-wide coverage and ubiquitous access to all leading free-to-air TV broadcasters and pay-TV platforms in Asia Pacific, the AsiaSat fleet has been widely used by video service providers and broadcasters for occasional use transmissions of live international sports events.

These top quality sports events included the Winter Olympic Games, the Indian Premier League, FIFA World Cup, BWF Badminton World Championships and the XIX Commonwealth Games which were held on 3 – 14 October in New Delhi and televised for the first time in HD.
